Marc Thiessen, former President George W. Bush’s speechwriter, thought he was scoring points against U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) when Thiessen countered Tuberville’s opposition to Ukraine funding by saying the war funding was “creating jobs” in Alabama:

U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance was having none of it, posting, “I wonder if there’s a more efficient way to create jobs than printing $61 billion and sending some of the weapons it buys to Ukraine.”

Vance was joined by a stream of X users, including American Greatness publisher Chris Buskirk, in criticizing Thiessen’s “jobs” take.

This is not the first time Thiessen has made the “jobs” case for the Ukraine War. He also authored a Nov. 2023 Washington Post column entitled, “Ukraine Aid’s Best-Kept Secret: Most of the Money Stays in the U.S.A..”

The war’s has resulted in as many as 500,000 casualties in Ukraine and Russia.

Thiessen was Bush’s speechwriter from 2007 to 2009, after serving as speechwriter for Sec. of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from 2001 to 2006. He is also author of the 2010 book, “Courting Disaster: How the C.I.A. Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack.”
