Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that he is beginning the process of stepping down from his role as a special government employee.

The SpaceX and Tesla CEO made the announcement in a post on X Wednesday evening and thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity he’s been given to help reduce wasteful spending in the federal government.

Must predicted that the mission of DOGE “will only strengthen over time” as it becomes a way of life throughout the federal government.

Musk was officially hired as a “special government employee” which is a role first created by Congress in 1962 that allows the executive or legislative branch to hire short-term employees for “no more than 130 days in a 365-day period.”

Fox News reports that Musk’s 130 day term began on Inauguration Day and is set to expire on May 30.

The DOGE organization itself is a temporary cross-departmental organization which is set to disband on July 4, 2026, according to Trump’s executive order.

The advisory team was called into existence for the purpose of identifying and ending government waste, corruption and fraud.

Musk’s departure is not a surprise and Trump had observed in March, “I think he’s amazing. But I also think he’s got a big company to run. And so at some point he’s going to be going back.”

The president added, “I’d keep him as long as I can keep him. He’s a very talented guy. You know, I love very smart people. He’s very smart. And he’s done a good job. DOGE is, we’ve found numbers that nobody can even believe.”

White House budget director Russell Vought has been tapped to lead the DOGE agenda, moving forward, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Vought confirmed on Wednesday that the White House is ready to send a modest package of DOGE cuts to Congress next week.
