On Monday, the Department of Education (ED) announced that it would be cutting another $600 million in taxpayer funding that had been used to promote “divisive” and “inappropriate” left-wing ideologies, including diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
According to Fox News, the funding was primarily through grants to support programs in favor of DEI and other far-left ideas, including “instruction on White privilege and White supremacy.” The $600 million cut follows the announcement of another drastic cut of $370 million in DEI training for the department, after Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uncovered such wasteful and partisan spending.
The $600 million in funding was targeted due to “requiring practitioners to take personal and institutional responsibility for systemic inequities (e.g., racism) and critically reassess their own practices,” the ED revealed. It had also funded “spaces for critical reflection to help educators confront biases and have transformative conversations about equity,” and other initiatives that focused on “building historical and sociopolitical understandings of race and racism to interrupt racial marginalization and oppression of students in planning, instruction, relationship building, discipline and assessment.”
The move was celebrated by education transparency advocates on social media, including Tiffany Justice, the co-founder of Moms for Liberty.
“Less money on DEI nonsense means more money to make sure teachers know how to teach students to read,” Justice posted on X, adding the hashtag “#MakeAmericaLiterateAgain.”
Such massive cuts at the ED are widely seen as a precursor to eventually abolishing the department altogether, as President Trump had repeatedly promised on the campaign trail to do so. President Trump, along with Musk and DOGE, has targeted several federal agencies for total elimination, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
