The far-left American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has outlined its plan to undermine national security and oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to carry out mass deportations of illegal aliens.
According to Axios, multiple chapters of the ACLU located along the southern border made their announcement on Tuesday, stating that they would file legal challenges against the major components of the deportation plans, including the construction of new mass detention centers.
The group praised itself for the “robust challenge” that it plans to mount against the incoming administration, having previously resisted similar efforts in the first term, which included over 400 lawsuits. Most prominently, the ACLU tried unsuccessfully to overturn President Trump’s travel ban against multiple Muslim countries.
Bigger challenges await the ACLU in the second term compared to the first. Two border states, Texas and Arizona, have passed state laws that will make it easier for state authorities to carry out deportations and assist federal immigration authorities with such efforts. The ACLU and other left-wing activists claim, with no evidence, that such laws are unconstitutional.
At the same time, the ACLU must reconcile with stronger support for the 45th and 47th President’s immigration agenda among Democrats as he prepares to begin his second term. The House of Representatives passed the Laken Riley Act with overwhelming bipartisan support, with multiple Senate Democrats voicing their support for the legislation as well. The bill is named after a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal alien who was able to enter the country due to the open-border policies of the outgoing Biden Administration.
In response, the ACLU says that it hopes to “change the narrative” on illegal immigration, as a majority of Americans view illegal aliens as a threat to public safety.
The group also plans to collaborate more closely with so-called “sanctuary” cities and states, jurisdictions which have vowed to defy the federal government and harbor illegal aliens. The ACLU’s “Firewall for Freedom” campaign will provide further legal advice and assistance to sanctuary cities and states as they prepare for a stronger crackdown on illegals by the Trump Administration.
